What's the difference between a PHEV and an EV?

A PHEV like the Lexus NX PHEV from our Lexus dealership near Santa Clarita is a plug-in hybrid. That means that, like an EV, it has a battery pack, electric motors, and a plug. However, unlike an EV, it still has an engine, and cannot use a fast charger.

What are the different "levels" of chargers?

There are three kinds of EV chargers, giving you more choices than you may realize:

• Level 1 charging uses 120V alternating current through a common household outlet; this is the slowest way to charge your Lexus EV.
• Level 2 charging uses a 240V alternating current, so it's faster than Level 1 charging, though it's best done through a professionally installed charging station.
• Level 3, or DC Fast Charging, uses direct current for a quicker rate of charge, but must be done at a public charging station.

How can I find a Level 3 fast charger?

Current Lexus models already have access to the Lexus Enform suite, with subscription services that help you check on vehicle health, navigate to points of interest, and locate filling stations. This is updated to help drivers locate public charging stations.

What is EV range?

EV range is an estimate from the manufacturer or the EPA of how far your electric vehicle can travel on a full charge. Like a gas engine, these figures are estimates that can change based on weather, driving habits, vehicle load, and other variables.

What's regenerative braking?

First developed for hybrids, regenerative braking is also used by EVs. When you press down on the brakes (or, in some vehicles, use one-pedal driving), the electric motor runs backward briefly, slowing the car and sending electricity back to the battery as it does. This can help to extend your range slightly.
